02 05 2006 -  Carrock Fell and High Pike with my grandson, Joe

We started from near Apronful of Stones just north of Stone Ends farm and followed the path that climbs steeply via Further Gill Sike, eventually reaching the cairn at the eastern peak. We stopped briefly for some lunch at the summit, taking shelter from a cold wind amongst the remnants of the iron age hill fort. The skies were mostly grey throughout the walk with only an occasional glimpse of blue. Skiddaw and the tops of the other highest fells were shrouded in cloud all day but the rain which had been promised never materialised. We continued from Carrock Fell's summit to a very cold High Pike via Round Knott and Miton Hill before descending past the old mines and over Carrock Beck back to the main road and our starting point. I then enjoyed a pint of Jennings bitter at the Mill Inn, Mungrisdale, while Joe skimmed stones across the River Glenderamackin.
