The weather forecast had promised heavy showers but in the event it was quite sunny as we set off along Aira Force and we had no rain until leaving Gowbarrow Fell summit. We were relieved that the rain didn't last long and by the time we reached the cairn above Yew Crag there was sunshine again and good, if hazy views across Ullswater. Later we wandered around Glenridding for a while and came across a curious map outside the Ullswater Steamers' office on the pier (see photographs at the bottom of the page) presumably intended to confuse any invading foreign armies! |

The above map appears outside the Ullswater Steamers' office at Glenridding Pier
(and also at Pooley Bridge Pier and no doubt at Howtown Pier)
and is topographically incorrect.
The map actually offers a mirror image of the true topography.
By flipping the image we get the correct topography as shown below........

......though of course we now have a mirror image of the place names.
This must all be very confusing for visitors!
