From Dobgill car park I took the path to Harrop Tarn and then turned left to climb up towards the beacon that over looks the southern end of Thirlmere. From here the path climbs over a number of closely connected tops which gradually gain height above Nab Crags, Castle Crag and Black Crags. I detoured north a little over Black Knott before picking my way over the final grassy slopes to the summit. I saw no-one else on the mountain all afternoon. There had been substantial clouds and some showers during the early part of the walk but once I reached the summit things brightened up and visibility was good. Leaving the summit I followed the ruined fence posts north before dropping down towards Standing Crag and then stayed with the path that wheels eastwards into the woods and back down to Harrop Tarn. The afternoon ended with bright sunshine and blue skies as I enjoyed a pint in the garden of the Badger Bar at Rydal. |

According to Wainwright the top of Ullscarf has 'no vestige of shelter' but just a few steps to the
north west of the summit is this little cranny - perhaps it wasn't there in his day.
